| Q1) "to what extent are my responsibilities for his past debt?" A1) Legally, you will have no responsibility. But, you COULD have a hard time having to explain that to the debt collectors who will probably contact YOU.... over and over again! Q2) "will creditors come after me once we are married" A2) As noted in A1, they will very probably come after both of you, after all, they won't know that your debts are separate. And when you tell them they are, they will still go after you. That is there job.... to harass him (or him through you) until he pays his debt. Q3) "and will my credit be affected if i do get married." A3) Your pre-marriage credit history will remain as it was prior to the marriage. Problem is, anytime you jointly apply for credit (home, furniture, car, etc.) both of your histories will be reviewed. And his will very probably bring the joint application down from the level it would have been at and possibly affect your offered interest rate. Q4) "What can i do to protect myself and my good credit" A4) When you get married, you not only marry the person, but you inherit all their baggage. And their credit profile is one of the bags. The only thing you can do is to make sure that any account with your name on it is paid as agreed. If not, then your credit history will be impacted.

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport! |
