Question

What are Step-parent legal responsibilities 4 Court Orders

What is the name of your state? OHIO

What ar ethe legal obigations of a step-parent when it comes to Juvenile Court orders for the child's parents?

The way I read Ohio Revised Code is a PARENT is either natural or adoptive and a GUARDIAN is appointed by the court.

Juvy Court ordered the parents of my step-son to Parenting classes due to 2 unruly charges we pressed and a furfew violations. We pressed the unruly charges due to him refusing to accept the consequences (stay grounded) for unwanted behavior. We feel the court has labelled us as bad parents or we wouldn't be sent to class.

An OH Juvenile PO told me that as a step-parent the court has bo right to force me to attend this class 8 week class. He pointed out that I was no allowed to file the unruly charges, my wife had to do so.

The boy turns 18 in Oct. We have not other children.

Is there a legal or moral way out of this class?

Did the court order you personally, the step-parent, to take these classes? If so, you have to go. If not, then not.

Thank you for the reply. The court order the "parents" to attend the class. It did not name me specifically or step-parent specifically. The only thing I can find defining parent is in Ohio Revised Code 2111.01-G:

(G) "Parent" means a natural parent or adoptive parent of a minor child whose parental rights and responsibilities have not been terminated by a juvenile court or another court.

My position is that I am not a parent as described by the law. I go to court today for a hearing to try to be relieved of the obligation.
