When Can I Do Whatever I Want For Real?

What is the name of your state? New York

I want to go to India this coming winter. I am 17 now but i will be 18 this summer. Therefore by winter, I will have already turned 18 years old. My mother is greatly opposed to sending me to a distant land by myself. She says that I am not allowed, by law, to do whatever I choose, until i turn 21 years of age. May I, by law, go to India at 18, or only until I am 21, without my parents' permission? And whatever the answer is, please explain why and where in the US laws it says so. Thank you very much.

At 18 you are considered an adult and can do as you please... HOWEVER you also have to remember that your parents no longer have to take care of you or take you in. This means.. they don't have to fund your trip nor do they have to give you a home to come to when you come back.

I should probably add that your parents also don't have to help you get the documents you need in order to get a passport to leave the country. You'll need at the VERY least a BC so if you plan to do this you better contact a customs agent and find out what you need for a visa/passport... AND what kind of shots you may or may not need. There is also the issue of having your shot records. Again, your parents don't have to help you get them or give you any copies they have. That would entitle you to seek out your doctor in order to get those.
