Question

witness at wedding--are we married?

What is the name of your state? TX

I was married in VA in 1980. I was told later that a witness was required at the wedding, to sign the license. However we got to the JP right before he left for the day and did not bring a witness with us, so there was not a witness at the wedding, or to sign. There was a place for a witness to sign. I was told by someone that we are not legally married since we did not have a witness. VA has since did away with this law, but at the time (Nov 1980), we were suppose to have a witness. Is this true?

My response:

Oh, yeah. You're definitely going to hell for this one. You should be shamed, dragged through the streets, drawn and quartered, gutted and mangled to death!

Of course you're married, Silly!

At the very least, and I mean the very least, since you're living in Texas, you're undoubtedly married under the Texas "Informal Marriage" (Common Law) marriage laws.

Take a deep breath. Now, exhale. Everything is okay!
