| Heck even my female GYNs have had chaperones in the room during my exams for the last few years. But just because it's a good business practice doesn't mean it's the law.

| According to Atul Gawande in his book "Better," the United States has no set standards when it comes to having "chaperones" for physical examinations, including obstetrician/gynecologist exams. It is left to a physician (or the medical facility where he practices) to set guidelines. Because false accusations can be leveled at doctors, having a nurse or assistant present during exams can provide some protection for the doctor, but it would not be illegal for a doctor to examine a patient without one. |

| I agree. ![]() I liked Gawande's "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" better than "Better," but both were fascinating. |

| i prefer having the LEAST amount of people wandering around the room. male or female doctor. so i'm actually thrilled when it's ONLY the doctor. |

| My last GYN appt was with a male doctor, rather than my usual female PCP. He had a female nurse present for the exam. I know it was for his protection, but it was also comforting for me. Bottom line alexa, it is legal to not have a nurse present. If you requested one there, I'm sure they would honor your wishes.
