Question

Dental Problem - need advice!!

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Pennsylvania

Earlier this year I had been a patient of a dentist in Pittsburgh.
During my visits to the dentist, I was given several fillings. Two of my teeth have been super sensitive to hot and cold foods ever since then. I haven't gone back to my previous dentist since my last fillings, but on the phone they just told me that it should go away eventually. Well it hasn't.

I went to a much better and cheaper dentist on October 3, 2009, and she told me that I will have to have fillings on teeth #5 and #12 redone because there is no contact between them, and that it was because of the faulty fillings my previous dentist had performed. She said that this also has been the cause of my severe discomfort because of the sensitivity to hot and cold that the gap is causing.

What I would like from you is a advice as to what steps I should take from here. I have not contacted my previous dentist about any of this yet, so I am unsure if they are willing to refund me the charges for the botched fillings or to pay for their removal and the addition of my new ones by my new dentist.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say about my situations. Thank you for your time, and I hope all is well for all of you.

Please email me directly if possible. genehackermann AT gmail DOT com

No one is going to email you privately and you should remove your email from your post.

The dentist may be willing to refund the money but more likely he will want you to return so he can evaluate the problem and fix it if needed. The second dentist's theory doesn't even make any sense to me.

Do you really make foam?

If the teeth were restored and the dentist did not reestablish the contact, that could cause discomfort and pain, as well as food getting trapped in between the teeth. I would have a hard time understanding how it would create a problem of sensitivity to hot and cold.

Sensitivity to hot and cold could be caused by a lot of scenarios including open margins on the fillings, and being extremely deep restorations that may or may not have had a cavity liner placed under the filling that often can make the tooth less sensitive while it heals from the treatment.

A dentist that failed to restore the tooth properly should have been given the chance to redo the problem, though the normal response from a patient is why should I trust the person a second time, when he didn't do it right the first time. Response to that is everyone at time can make a mistake. It would have been nicer if he had caught the mistake while you were still in the treatment room, and it could have been corrected before you were dismissed.
