Flu shot mistake in Missouri!I went for a flu shot this past saturday at a local shopping club ($20 advertized service). The nurse stuck a syringe in my arm and then realized it had been used on someone else! She said I'm sorry, then proceded to give me a "new" syringe. She stopped the previous patient, who was still nearby and talked with her regarding her health, I assume. She then wrote out a note indicating what she had done, inserted the previous patients name address and tele number and mine, photocopied it, and gave each of us a copy. Before leaving the shopping club, I talked with the manager and he signed my copy and gave me his business card. My questions are: Is there a case of negligence here? Should she have given each a copy of the others name address etc...? I have seen on some of the forums that it could take 3 to 6 mons for problems to show up, what should I do? |

| Contact your own physician. Consult with a medmal attorney; one may be willing to communicate with the nurse and the company for whom she works. Your medical bills for general follow-up and testing should be paid for by the nurse, her employer, and/or the malpractice insurance carrier. Unless you have become infected with some disease, there is no obvious potential for any other monetary award. You may report the nurse to the state's board of nursing, also.

| People going to the $20 flu shot factories instead of their actual doctors offices....assembly line mentality leads to more mistakes.

I don't care whether a person is seen in a private office or an assembly line situation, the reuse of a single use disposal syringe is very wrong, and there is no excuse that I can see for anyone using a syringe a second time on another person. Makes one wonder what else these professionals are doing to violate standards of care that are mandated. |

| I didn't say it was OK under any circumstance. I'm saying a "clinic" where the nurses are vaccinating 30 people an hour or whatever ridiculous number they're trying to crank out, mistakes become more likely, because they are rushing through patients and not paying proper attention to what they're doing. The whole thing isn't right.

Could not have said it better! Most of the people giving the shots are not nurses. They can be medical assistants, EMTs, or others trained (sometimes in a weekend) to give an injection.

| This is my first time posting here, or any advice forum! I'm not the same guy every year looking for a way to get some money! I certainly am not bored and just looking for a reason to sue! I went to get the flu shot to prevent health problems, not create them! My doctors office isn't open on saturday, not that it makes a difference! The woman giving the shot was a registered nurse! The sharps disposal container was right in front of her! Now I have to worry for 6 to 12 months that I may have contracted a medical problem! I will try to negotiate with the company to have my expenses covered! |
