What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Seattle, WA

Sre hidden cameras allowed in hospitals? I have an infant in the hospital and found out yesterday that his entire L arm is bruised and no one knows why. He is in a semi private room so there is another baby there. They have volunteers in the hospital that come in to hold the babies.

Depending on who placed the camera and who has access to the footage, it could be allowed or not. The HOSPITAL could certainly use surveillance so long as they have proper restrictions on who sees the footage and proper security to minimize theft of it, it would fall under HIPAA. Their own security staff have been educated on HIPAA and signed non-disclosure agreements.

It would likely not be acceptable for a patient to place a camera which could capture patients other then that person. If they would only be filming their own interactions with their doctor and it was only video not sound, it might be ok. Audio recording is restricted in many states.

It would not be legal for you to put a camera in an area where someone else's child could be filmed. It wouldn't violate HIPAA per se because patients are not subject to HIPAA (only medical providers and insurers and others that have access to health information in the course of their work), but it WOULD violate the privacy of any other patient to film them without permission.
