Infected stitches never removed

My friend had hand surgery . The M.D. forgot to remove 4 stitches. She had fever and infections for 5 months until she had them removed in an emergency room. Should she see a lawyar?

Some stiches are meant to be left in and dissolve, how does she know that they were supposed to be removed? Why did she wait so long to have them removed if she knew it was infected? If there is proof in the medical records that these were not stiches meant to dissovle and she returned to the surgeon with her concerns in a timely manner and they still failed to remove the stiches, she might have some grounds for legal action and could take her medical records to a med mal attorney for review, but most likely no stiches were left in that were meant to be removed.
