My Mom Cant Walk

THe hospital was in Oregon. My mom had elective surgery to have a knee operation so she could walk again. The surgeon was supposedly very experienced and had done 160+ surgeries this year alone. THe surgery seemed to be gong fine until after the surgery where the anesthstialogist didn't realize my mom was without anesthetics for 3 hours post surgery during recovery. The epidural had came out while she was being moved to the recovery room, this caused extreme amounts of pain. It also resulted in her leg muscles and back muscles stroking that temporarily paralyzed her leg mobility. it has been at least 6 months since the surgery and the doctors have said physical therapy wont do anything else for her. Today she has no feeling in the bottom of her feet when you prick the soles of her feet with a needle there is no feeling. She currently walks around with a cane and has to take breaks about every 20 feet of walking. This has extremely limited her mobility and the lack of cooperation from the hospital and their staff only complicates the situation more. The situation frustrates me and my mom and the entire family as we do not know what to do or where to go. It almost appears she would have been better not to go into surgery and live with the previous leg problem as the surgery only complicated her current health and extremely limited her mobility in her life. This is the story in a nutshell at this point we feel helpless is there any case for legal action here? couldnt we just ask for paperwork from the hospital to file a claim if there is one?

legal action for what? Have you investigated the possible complications from the type of surgery she had? Are these within that list?

Are there other reasons she has trouble walking? it would appear so based upon you post:

muscles stroking? I'm not a medical person so you will have to explain that one to me. The only strokes I am aware of are blockages in arteries in the brain.

How long ago was this? Nerves can take up to a couple years to heal.

file a claim? You are considering suing somebody for injuries caused by medical malpractice. They will have plenty of legal help on their side. If you believe you have a justifiable suit, then you should see a medical malpractice attorney. You will have to prove damages were cause by improper treatment. You don;t just "file a claim"

Just a guess, but perhaps OP means her Mother's muscles were in spasm or contraction.

OP, your Mother's health was already compromised before she had the surgery. The informed consent she signed spelled out any risks or complication of the surgery, including the possibility that it would not improve her status. Having said that, I have to wonder why the recovery room staff wasn't a little more vigilant with checking the epidural placement, especially when she was complaining of so much pain.

Loss of epidural placement causes no physical problem unless, in some very strange way, the catheter lodged against a nerve root, compressing or damaging the root in another manner.

I fail to understand what the poster is saying. Lack of anesthesia during recovery does not lead to a stroke in the legs, whatever that means.

That was the only explanation I could think of, as well.

I still have that big questionmark over my head regarding the leg stroke.
