I had a root canal about a week ago. After the procedure, the dentist told me a file tip broke off and was embedded in the root canal. Needless to say, I'm having considerable pain from this. He said he would refer me to an endo to hopefully remedy the situation, and deduct the endo's expense from his bill. Three days ago I saw another dentist. After taking x-rays, this dentist doesn't think the file tip can be removed, leaving me with the depressing choice of having the tooth extracted. I have a good, 15-year relationship with the dentist who owns the practice where the root canal was done. With the info I've given you, can you tell me what to expect in terms of liability? If I have to have the tooth extracted I believe my dentist should be responsible for all surgeries and costs. I want nothing more than to have this problem corrected. I've already paid the dentist $500 of the $1600 for the RC and crown. Thank you.

Having a file beak in a canal does happen, and the choice of treatment need not be extraction or nothing. There is a possiblity of having an apicoectomy done. This procedure will clean out the area at the root tip, and fill that canal at the root tip. This procedure has a great deal of success, and is something to be considered.

Having the file break, and having your dentist state tht he would cover the cost of the endo seems a fair way to deal with this problem. And to have a professional offer to cover this is to be commended.

I think that if you work with your dentist, and his remedy, you will maintain a good relationship, and have a fine end result.

As to naturally having pain, from the broken file, that is not quite correct, as often there is no pain when this happens, and the discomfort that you are experiencing can be from any number of causes.

Let's see, where do I start?
For him to offer to have this covered is commendable?
You've got to be kidding me? Since when did the standard of care and personal responsibility in this country drop so low that we commend someone for taking responsibility for their own professional undebatable negligence?
You've got to be kidding me! This person didn't walk in needing to see an additional specialist, but when he left he did! And, not because of some unforeseen underlying condition but because of undo neglect.

Next issue! "As to naturally having pain, from the broken file, that is not quite correct". Let's see, if the file has enough pressure exerted on it to break we have to consider that there will be an equal and opposite reaction, correct? Sometimes the file chip might bounce of the tissue and land harmlessly in an area easy to extract but it might just as easily and naturally become lodged at or near the place of the breakage. Which if the file were being used in between the root and the tissue, there is a distinct possibility that the fragment will be lodged in the tissue causing understandable and natural pain.

As far as there being any number of causes for this poor person's pain other than the file fragment, WOULD YOU CARE TO NAME SOME?
THIS IS THE TYPE OF STUFF THAT REALLY GETS MY GOAT!
Please try not to refer to invisible unnamed causes when advising someone about things that could possibly be causing them pain. It's unprofessional, disingenuous, false and self serving but anybody can plainly see you lack the intelligence or integrity to offer a complete and truthful course of action. In fact, the only way you would have offered up that line about the commendation is if you were wholly sympathetic to the medical malpractice insurance industry. Listening to you is like listening to the pussbag defense attorneys that spout civil rights for convicted child molesters need to be improved.
ANy medical/dental procedure has known complications. If you bothered to research you answer you would see that what Barry says is correct.

Possible Complications

As with most invasive medical or dental procedures, complications can occur. Here are some possibilities.

Sometimes when a root canal is opened for treatment, the oxygen in the air will trigger some bacteria to start growing, causing inflammation and pain.

Bacteria may get pushed out through the tips of the roots. Blood vessels enter the tooth through a small hole (the apex of the root) at the bottom of the root. Sometimes during a root canal procedure, bacteria are pushed out through this small hole into surrounding tissue. If this happens, the surrounding tissue will become inflamed and possibly infected. This can be treated with painkillers, and sometimes antibiotics, but the site could be painful until it clears up.

A root canal treatment can puncture the side of the tooth. This can happen if the canal is curved or if the canal cannot be located. The instruments are flexible so that they bend as the canal curves, but sometimes the instrument makes a small hole in the side of the tooth. If saliva can get into the hole, the tooth will have to be treated further or extracted. If the hole is far enough under the gum line that saliva can't reach it, it may heal.

A root canal may be missed or an entire canal may not be fully cleaned out. Locating canals within the tooth can be difficult. If a canal or an offshoot of a canal isn't located and cleaned out, the tooth can remain infected and the root canal procedure will have to be repeated. This also can happen if a canal isn't measured correctly and pieces of infected or inflamed pulp are left near the bottom. Occasionally, root canals have branches that are not accessible to traditional treatment.

A file may break. The tip of a file may break off inside the tooth. Usually, it's possible to leave the piece in the tooth and finish the root canal. But if the cleaning of the canal has not been finished, the file piece may have to be removed. Sometimes this can be done from the top of the tooth. However, in some cases, the file can only be removed through a surgical procedure called an apicoectomy. A small incision is made in the gum to access the root of the tooth, and the portion of the root containing the file piece is removed.

Pain, or the Lack of It

In most cases, you will not experience any pain during the root canal procedure. Your dentist will completely numb your tooth and the surrounding area. If this doesn't seem to be working, alert your dentist right away. Some people fear the anesthetic injections more than the procedure itself, but numbing gels and modern injection systems have made injections virtually painless. Let your dentist know immediately and he or she can modify the technique to avoid repeating the pain.

Is that the best you've got? If you had a brain, you'd take it out and play with it! I don't know anything about the emergency room and tripping but I'll be sure to mention your name if the need ever arises. You're a pathetic half witted troll with the personality of a toilet mint. Why don't you come down from your high horse and realize the best you had, ran down your mother's leg when you were born?
Wait, Your calling Rmet a troll?
What is wrong with you?

Maybe you should try laying off whatever your on for a while:rolleyes:

You can't honestly be so paranoid that you think that insurance companies have people planted here to answer questions!

If so, why do they answer questions that have nothing to do with insurance, malpractice etc.?
Can you tell me that?

file broken

To gogomunch.

I really don't know what the problem is, but when I answer a dental question it is based on over 20 years of experience in the field, and are based on how I would respond to a situation.

Files break. Without an x-ray of where it is, it could have made a perfect seal in the canal, and people even in the best of circumstances, can have post op pain.

A dentist that has a problem occur, and informs the patient, and looks to make the patient whole, is doing what should be done, and this was the comment that was made.

The options for treatment can be discussed.

But once again I am distressed by the level of comments that have occurred, by other parties, that does nothing to help those that have questions, and will lead to people leaving this source of advice.

Sort of reminds me of the people that would put a virus out, thinking that it only a harmless prank, but not realizing the long range consequences that can occur.

And I guess I should put the caveat in, I am only offering an opinion on the comments on the board, hoping to answer some questions. People can then discuss the matter with the proper people and decide what to do after than.

copy and paste answer you gave before. I can't say that there aren't some people on here with good intentions but they are far outweighed by the completely incompetent dirt bags trying to pass themselves as proper legal counsel. Free medical advice is one thing, legal is another. I will have this site shut down or rendered ineffectual. If you want to help people with medical problems, start your own board. Did you say you are a dentist? Or do you simply have over "20 years in the field?"
Alrighty then, you keep working on shutting this site down.
