11/10/2005 AWOL Returnee Story

What is the name of your state? Nevada. I did OSUT which is one station unit training where you do basic training and AIT in one time period at Fort Sill. AIT came around and I failed the first test and got reclassed. I was moved to Fort Lee where I ran the second day I was there, I was in the Quartermaster about to be given to the DS. I stayed AWOL for about 40 days and called Fort Knox to see if I had been dropped from rolls. The first time I called I found out I was DFR'ed. I called twice more after than to be sure. (Some of them lie.) I went back to Fort Sill and turned myself in at the gate. The guard took my ID and called the MP's to come and get me. The MP's took me to some MP station where I talked to some guy. He told me what I already knew... that I was going to the PCF to be processed out of the army. So they dropped me off. I got settled in yada yada. This was on a monday because I hoped to be out on Friday... but I didnt plan well, Friday was veterans day, so thursday was the day I was hoping to leave. Throughout the four days I did inprocessing, got issued a new ID, went to ACAP, talked to the 1st Sgt and then talked to the Jag. These things didnt happen all at once, between those we did details. We got plenty of breaks. On thursday the last thing was JAG where 99.9999 percent you leave that day. I got my leave paper and left that thursday. There were nine of us that left on thursday. Turning yourself in is the BEST thing to do. Turn yourself in at Fort Sill, they get you out the quickest. I hope this helps some of you looking for a way to get the hell out. thanks for this story. it seems typical of everyone who posts here no matter if they are awol a few months, 2,3,4-15 years. This seems to be a legit, sure fire and low-risk way out if you dont' mind an OTH. Thanks and take care and hope you answered alot of questions out there for those who are confused.

I would agree -- it is typical. BUT exceptions can and are made. I say that not to caution anyone against turning themselves in -- it is always best to turn yourself in, but simply to point out that a OTH may not be the extent of what occurs following turning yourself in.

Factors that influence the decision include, but are not limited to, other pending charges at the time of the AWOL, rank and time in service at the time of AWOL, etc.
