asthma disqualification? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? california i was never told i was diagnosed with asthma. when i was younger i would come visit my dad in southern cali. and would have these bad allergy attacks because of the grass scalping and reseeding, i never thought anything was wrong but my dad took me to a doctor and he gave me an inhaler, i was told it was just for the sneezing and coughing. i enlisted in the coast guard a few weeks ago and after reading up on thing that you could bring and such one thing i noticed was an inhaler. i havnt used mine in quite a few years so i didnt think it would be a problem i usualy just take care of myself with some benadryll. when i brought up joining the millitary with my parents they told me i couldn't join because of my asthma, i didnt know i had asthma and im a little afraid that if i tell my recruter he will tell me i cant join. im an active person and have done a little research on the affects of asthma and i dont have any symptoms, and those people who enlist and the military find out that you had a history of asthma that they kick you out for lying. how can i lie if i didnt know? i need advice i dont know what to do. |

Does your research supersede the diagnosis of a medical professional? Talk to your recruiter and tell him the truth. Hiding something as serious as asthma could result in your death during training. If you have a serious attack during your time in the coast guard the medical personnel will have no way of knowing that you have a serious medical condition that requires specialized care. Common sense dictates that hiding your condition is just a dangerous and horrible idea. |

Tell your recruiterSince ERAUPIKE's reasonable advice didn't seem to persuade you, let me try: You will not risk a charge of fraudulent enlistment for telling the recruiter about your asthma before entering on active duty. Afterwards, the Coast Guard Personnel Manual COMDTINST M1000.6A says: 12.B.18.b. Reasons to Discharge for Misconduct 5. Fraudulent enlistment. A member may be discharged for procuring a fraudulent enlistment, induction, or period of active service through any material misrepresentation, omission, or concealment which, if known at the time, might have resulted in rejection. ... a. Deliberately concealed criminal records or other information necessary to effect enlistment; or b. Any current or past medical conditions or problems ... which would have prevented enlistment in the Coast Guard, had they been known. Furthermore, recruiters are more likely to allow people in with real problems than keep people out with minor problems. So don't worry - if you tell your recruiter that you have asthma, you will most likely be tested and if the recruiter finds that it's not serious, you'll get in. If the recruiter finds that it's too serious, then s/he will keep you out - for your own good and the good of the Coast Guard. Last edited by objetora; 09-07-2009 at 07:47 PM.
