AWOL and 6 months?

What is the name of your state? wa
My son has been AWOL from the Marines for 5 1/2 months.
He finally turned himself in. He called me today asking for advice. He also tells me he tested positive for pot the last time he returned and he also has a neg driving arrest to deal with in addition to the AWOL issue. He say's he could get 90days to 6 mos in the brig He tells me that he's has been advised "informaly" he should have waited til after 6 months. Then it would just be 30 days then discharge. Could this be true. What do you advise. He is considering bolting again for 6 months! What is the name of your state?

Your son was ill advised. The Marine Corps is unlike other branches of our Military, and does not take lightly to UA/AWOL!

Your best advice is to encourage him to do what is right, and try and salvage in a good way his time left on his contract.
If he is still in training, that is, he has not been out of bootcamp very long, then there might be a good chance for him to
get an entry level seperation. Lastly, the Military has a ZERO tolerance for illegal drug use!

Bad idea. Bolt again for another 6 months and he could easily find himself in the brig awaiting a nice court martial with life long effects.

This is the United States Marine Corp. your talking about. This is the institution that thrives on making examples out of people.

And a fine institution it is.

I suggest the OP's babyboy do a runner for another year. Then he can have that court martial.

I would advise you to advise your son to stay where he is. 30 days to 6 months is a walk in the park compared to whats gonna happen if he leaves again. The awol is bad, but the drugs and the dwi or driving thing just adds to the fire. The right thing is to stay and face the music for his best interest.
