AWOL from Army....

What is the name of your state? Texas

I know you guys have seen a good handfull of these AWOL posts but I just couldn't help myself. I joined the Army in late January 2005 and left my unit at Fort Drum, NY late August 2005. I spent at most a month in my unit at Fort Drum. Anyways, that puts me AWOL somewhere around 8 months now. I planned to turn myself in as soon as my packet was processed, in other words.....I want out. So I call and call and still no packet. So I get a little tired of waiting around and being scared of getting a job and driving, so I move into an appartment with my wife and we both start work just like a normal couple. So here we are now months and months later, I've made good money to get us up on our feet and my wife is getting a good paying job, so now seems like the perfect time to get this mess behind me, but still no packet! My wife gets a job with the city police and they run background checks and everything on me and still nothing. Well next thing is my wife, out of curiousity, calls Fort Drum and talks to an MP officer. From what my wife tells me, he had my paperwork on his desk and says he won't push my warrant, but if it goes through obviously things will be more severe. Well to my understanding without the warrant I will be sent right back to my unit and be marching in my boots again. Needless to say I'm curious, just want some opinions, I plan to call the hotline tomorrow and see what I can find out, and possibly call this officer up and see what I can find out from him. I also read online from different places that here recently the Fort Sill, Fort Knox packet stuff has stopped, now everyone is being sent to their duty station to be dealt with. Then I read that people are still goin to Fort Sill and Fort Knox like I understood to begin with. Does anybody have the slightest clue on what is "currently" going on with this? I apprectiate any helpful opinions and information. If I do find anything out soon I will be sure to post it.

My response:

What's the matter with you? You don't want to fight in the rediculous war, under these morons? What's the matter with you?

I'll bet you and/or your parents voted for that idiot. They were just sick and tired of living the good life under the Democrats, and just wanted some excitement in their son's life!

Like paying those gasoline prices?

So the hotline says no packet still and I called a recruiter that I know. He says since I was DFR I am considered a Deserter and the Army wouldn't keep me in, but I will have to turn myself in and go to my unit, then probably have to wait at least 60 days for a court martial. Then I assume I get whatever discharge is decided. Does this sound accurate?

My response:

This is one of those times that I wish I was General George S. Patton. I'd slap the crap out of you, and then I'd shoot you with one of my ivory-handled .45's.

This is what the Army should do to deserters.

My response:

I always knew you were strange; I just didn't know you liked deserting cowards.

It's always nice to know where you stand.

or by 99.9% of the posts here you could just wait until you actually are DFR'd then turn yourself in, get an OTH, and be sent home. Just don't some research on this board for the MAJORITY of same topic posts. They all end in the same way, don't let these idiots get to you. The anonmitity of the internet is a something spectatcular huh

Yeah no kidding, anyways, it seems the majority are still turning themselves in at Fort Sill after calling and comfirming their packets are in. In my case though, they haven't got my packet so that would mean I haven't been dropped from the rolls yet right? Sounds to me like either people are trying to trick me into going back to my duty station or they really don't know what they are talking about (not talking about you guys). I assume my MOS needs guys cause they have been holding my warrant back for quiet some time now, I would have never expected they could do that. Anybody else been through this or heard of someone having the same problem? I apologize if I stir something up or offend anyone by my actions, I just want to get this behind me now and move on, I feel if I go back now I will be right back at square one again. Thanks again.

Its been 3 months for me and still not DFR'd. One person at the hotline said they have seen it take up to a year.
Just curious what happens if you are NEVER DFR'd? Hopefully soon, I'm ready to get this over with myself.

"They" want you. Don't expect them to DFR you. Especially in an undermanned MOS. It _could_ happen, but it doesn't seem that way. They are hoping you'll just turn yourself in. Also, even if they DO put a warrant out on you, they still might not DFR you, because you are in an undermanned MOS and "they" want to set an example with you.

Aha!

Just giving an update here.....I got ahold of my unit and talked to some of the guys that do the awol packets and what not. One of the guys said it was his fault that I haven't been dropped yet, he was missing something in the paperwork and was argueing with the lady at Fort Knox that he didn't need to do what she was asking him to do. Then he goes and on to say that they were doing it now and were about to send it off. I kept calling every few days to check on the status and they finally sent it off. I then waited for Fort Knox to get the packet in, which took about a week and a half, and they are now confirming that they DO have my DFR paperwork and everything is good to go. So now I'm ready to pack my bags and head to Fort Sill, OK. Who knows what will happen, I am permenant party, although I wasn't in for long at all, but maybe this can become a more clear example of what happens to perm. party guys. I'll post an update of what happens, thanks for any advice.

As permanent party I'm almost certain that they are going to send you back to your unit.

They did with me, and I've heard nothing but that from everyone I've talked too.

Especially since you haven't been gone for that overly long of a time. _(1 year +).

But hopefully fort Sill will take ya, and good luck. I go to Fort Bliss on monday, so we'll see how it goes.
