AWOL From Basic Training

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? GA

So if I have been AWOL from the Army (during basic training at Benning) for only a few days and decide to turn myself in at Sill, I will just be sent back to my training until and not discharged? I simply want out. I respect everything out Military does but its just not for me and I didn't know what else to do BUT leave. I do plan on turning myself in, but I don't want to wait 30 days before reporting to PCF. What happens if I turn myself in sooner? I know its case by case, but if I really want out, what are some general things that could happen?

I've only received 2 paychecks from the Army and have only been in basic for 4 weeks. I just want out and want to go through PCF (which I have read about on here, but it seems everyone had been AWOL longer than 30 days and I don't want to wait that long.).

AWOL From Basic Training

UtorVita,

How long have you been AWOL? If you do not want to wait the full 30 days there is no way of getting out through the PCF. You will have to return to your unit of assignment. They will put you back to training once someone has administered non-judicial punishment. If you go AWOL again then you will automatically be dropped from role (DFR). I think you should go back and read through the forums of other SM who have gone AWOL and turned themselves into Ft. Knox or Ft. Sill. It is always a good idea to turn yourself in regardless how long you have been gone instead of being detained by law-enforcement. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I have read about everything possible. My friend i was in reception with in headquarters company used to work at pcf in fort sill. After 4 days you will get put on leave. Kentucky your stuck there until you are discharged. Just wait the 30 days its not that bad. I went awol august 28th from fort benning and i am turning myself in tuesday. If you get picked up you'll be in jail prob at least 2 weeks instead of the 4 days at pcf. make sure you get there tuesday morning no later. you will have a military id for 3 to 6 months until your discharge goes through. If you were on base for a month and got paid for a month then you wont have to pay anything back.

Its just, there is no guarantee of being DFRd after 30 days and then I would end up getting sent back to Benning, which I don't want. I don't think the Deserter Hotline gives out DFR information anymore so its just a guess when I turn myself in..

The odd thing is, I've only been AWOL for about 2 weeks and I got paid one time. 5 days after I got paid they went back into my bank account and took the paycheck back out. Would that mean I'm DFRd?

UtorVita,

No, The fact that they took the paycheck doesn't mean that you're dropped; it just means that they couldn't stop your pay in time.

I wouldn't advice staying out the 30 days tho. Just go back. You'll be punished, I'm sure. After everything is said and done, Go to them and say that you don't want to be a soldier anymore. They're gonna give you crap, that's what they are there for. Stand your ground, make it clear that you don't want to train anymore. They'll give you what's called an AdSep. It was almost like you never joined.

emokid,

Did you bring any evidence to PCF - any evidence as to why you went AWOL to present to the 1SG or anything like that? Did you have a lawyer with you or anything? I have no evidence to present and no lawyer. I have a bunch of reasons why I went AWOL, most of the medical/emotional, but I don't know how well that is going to hold up. I'm also going turning myself in alone and hopefully picking up an Army lawyer while at PCF. No clue how that is going to work out for me.

I dont think you will need any evidence. Just bring any paperwork you got from the military. The 1st sergeant just asks why you went awol. You just say 1 quick sentence or so and then you leave his office. Since you went awol from basic, your unit (which is the base you left from) wont want you back seeing how many people prob go awol from there anyway.

Yea, well once I'm DFR'd I don't really have a unit to go back to. Thanks for your responses, Emokid. I appreciate it. I'm not TOO concerned about how long I stay in PCF - I'm going to Ft. Knox because its a hell of a lot closer to my home - I just want this done and in my past. I've heard mixed stories about Knox, but most of the time its been the same as Sill. Out in 5-7 days depending on when you arrive. I guess the next hurdle is trying to figure out my status - my 30 days is up soon, but its going to take a while to get any DFR status (if possible anymore). Anyway, thanks for your responses. I know my actions are disgraceful to this fine country and I do appreciate everyone who serves with honor.

what the hell is it with ft benning? i went awol from there in 07 after being in training for 8 weeks. they sent me home for 30 days bc of a stress fracture and ended up coming back 3 days late. even then i was considered awol. when i got back i told them i didnt want to be there, then they labled me a flight risk and basically made my life hell. so i played it cool, layed low, went to sick call, got into a taxi and havnt been back since. anyway figured id share my story... pcf is a breeze you will be fine just dont get into any trouble between now and when you go pcf. by trouble i mean drive with a busted tail light or bad tags lol. good luck

Is getting a Desertion letter the same as being notified as DFR? Its been about, oh, 38-40 days now and I haven't received a DFR notification, only an AWOL letter followed by a Deserter letter. Maybe I'll have to contact the Deserter Hotline - figured I'd ask anyway.

Disregard my last statement - the Deserter letter also says something like, "effectively been dropped from the rolls..." ect ect ect.

DISCLAIMER: Being AWOL is against the law. I'm not advising you to stay AWOL, but am only explaining the consequences of different courses of action.

Not quite true. It often takes longer than 30 days to get DFR'd. If you show up at Ft. Sill or Ft. Knox PCF before you are DFR'd, you will be sent back to your old unit.

If you want to get out at PCF, you MUST find out if you are DFR'd first. The best way to find this out is to call an AWOL apprehension office. There is one at almost every Army base. Give the AWOL apps people your name and SSN and ask if you have been DFR'd yet. If they refuse to answer, then call a different base's AWOL apps office.

Once you find out you are DFR'd, then you need to talk to a GI Rights counselor or a lawyer to document the reasons you went AWOL so that you'll have the best chance to get a decent discharge.
