AWOL past "following" you forever -

What is the name of your state? Trace my IP if your curious...

I'm honestly curious if anyone has been DENIED a job, or was accepted for a position, and then LATER FIRED from this position due to going awol or having an OTH?? I have a job at a pretty prominent financial company, and haven't had any problems. It's been 6 months since I started, with no worries. I didn't tell them my discharge, I said medical. Case closed.

iescaped "AWOL" NEW LIFE WITH "OTH"

"I will clearly state, that if you were court-martialed and received a bcd, then absolutely they will find out sooner or later; but if you got an admin discharge that is oth for undersirable/unsuitable you might escape without being fired; however, sooner or later you will have to face your past (you can run but never forever hide) and surely when you lie, that speaks volumnes of your own character."

I have been awol for the last 6 years. Have finished a bachelors degree, masters degree (both with Federal Student loans) and worked at a large fortune 500 company for the last 3.5 years. I've gotten a FHA home loan. Never had any problems with military status. Military people are quick to tell you that civilians care about your military experience, let me tell you: They Don't. Must say that I feel like I WANT to put some closure to it, but I don't see the benefit in it. I know that eventually I will, just don't have a sense of urgency to do so. Live your life as an upstanding citizen, realize you've made some mistakes and try to better your life. Only you can do that.

I am an attorney but this is not to be considered legal advice.

As a veteran, military officer etc., and now member of the civilian sector again, I can tell you that the experiences of the lady/gentleman above who is now working at the big firm are unusual. It doesn't give me any pleasure to tell her/him that s/he will eventually be discovered and probably fired.

You most likely had to lie on your employment application to get the job.

You will be terminated summarily when that ruse is discovered, and there is a good chance it will.

In my firm, discharges are routinely investigated, and you would not get in the door without your 214.

Another thing that I can tell you is that you can appeal your imperfect discharge. If interested, let me know and I'll give you info. There's a good article on about.com.

I received an OTH discharge in 1989. In 1991 I applied for a trucking job and filled out the application and was completely honest and let them know. I did not get the job as a result of the type of discharge and was told point blank that was the reason why. I have lived my life in a respectable way since my departure from the military. I have a house 2 vehicles a wife of 12 years and children. I now work with kids as an aquatic supervisor. I do not tell prospective employers about my military past because of the previous expierience and let me tell you my "character" is not flawed as a result.

People make mistakes in there lives especially when they are young dumb and full of *&^. The military's view that you should be made to regret for the rest of your life is assanine. I understand that they can't have every soldier going over the hill on them just because they didn't like the lifestyle or whatever but to put a stigma on the rest of a person's life and to hinder there ability to provide for themselves and there families is to harsh a punishment for the crime. I do not believe lying about a less than stellar militay past is any worse than what the military does.

I am NOT advising you to lie to your employer, I am simply answering your question and providing some insight with my own expieriences

I agree with the thread above, there is no reason a discharge from the military should affect you life as long as you did not kill, rape, or molest...i think you people get the picture. Im sure all you go army people out there have worked at a restaurant or did odd jobs in your life. well a lot of people quit mcdonalds or the grocery store, maybe not even to better themselves, maybe they did not like it. THE POINT IS, IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE IN THE MILITARY THEY SHOULD LET YOU LEAVE, AND I DONT GIVE TWO ****S IF ITS THE GOVT. IF AN FBI AGENT OR CIA AGENT WANTS TO QUIT THEN THEY PUT IN THEIR TWO WEEK OR WHATEVER NOTICE, NOT THAT I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD LEAVE A GOOD JOB LIKE THAT, BUT YOU COULD IF YOU WANTED. SO WHY CANT YOU LEAVE THE MILITARY. NOW BEFORE ALL YOU HEROES START REPLYING, IT SHOULDNT MATTER THAT YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT, YOU SHOULDNT HAVE TO. NOBODY EVER TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THAT MOST, NOT ALL RECRUITERS ARE STUPID ****EN LIARS ANYWAY, RIGHT THERE ALONE, INVALID CONTRACT. A CONTRACT IS A MUTUAL AGREEMENT, BETWEEN YOU AND THE MILITARY, BUT WHEN THEY LIE THAT ARE NOT HOLDING UP THERE END OF THE DEAL, SO WHY SHOULD THE SOLDIERS, AND THATS WHY A LOT OF THEM GO AWOL. BUT BEING THAT THEY ARE THE GOVT, THATS A TYPICAL SITUATION OF THE BULLEY IN HIGH SCHOOL PICKING ON SOMEBODY SMALL B/C HE CAN OR HE THINKS HE CAN.I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE SOLDIERS OUT THERE, BUT IM GONNA TELL YOU ONE THING, IF MY BATTLE BUDDY DOESNT WANT TO BE THERE I DONT WANT HIM WATCHING MY BACK THEN, JUST LET HIM LEAVE AND GET ON WITH HIS LIFE.I REALLY GET SICK OF PEOPLE KNOCKING OTHER PEOPLE B/C THEY HAVE PROBLEMS, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE MIGHT BE MAKING EXCUSES, BUT THE PROBLEM IS THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO MAKE EXCUSES B/C THE MILITARY SHOULD LET THEM LEAVE(DISCHARGE) THEM IF THEY DONT WANT TO BE THERE, END OF STORY.

Yeah, lets let everyone out of their contract. I mean, you know, that'll be good for discipline and troop unity, as we have folks just walk out when the going gets rough, because they can.

You go AWOL, you violate the law, you should be held accountable. And AWOL is as much of a crime as anything else. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Well there is another JAG lawyer who doesn't bite the hand that feeds him. Children and yes I say children should not be held accountable for for the rest of there lives because of an almost victimless crime.

These AWOL kid aren't even old enought to drink a beer in the U.S. But they are held to a standard that a lot of adults would not subject them selves to

Oh yea just had to add this. If its such a horrible crime, then why does the military usually just discharge admistatviley for the good of the service... Going AWOL is wrong and a crime, but it should not have to follow a person for the rest of there lives.

In my humble opinion it should stick with a person for a while perhaps 5 - 10 years. but a lifetime is just wrong

Awol Is A Most Serious Offense Punishable By Law

Contrary to those who think that awol is not an offfense: "Be advised, the longer you remain absent without leave, the stiffer the consequence will be." Also, if a court-martialed is involved and you could receive a bcd, brig time, pay forfiture and busted in rank; and so we are clear, "a bcd is a federal felony conviction; and awol are offenses against our own Country, the USA." How I know this, is because i have one and was never informed in a scintilla of what i just shared with you!

aw

who cares if awol is against your own country, they screw there own people everyday. We pay high taxes for everthing, we spend billions of dollars in iraq when there was no weapons of mass destruction, there is homeless people everywhere, but there is no money to help them b/c the govt spends it elsewhere. what about poor natalie in Aruba, we can go into other countries and do whatever we want, why dont one of you heroes tell me why no body went to find natalies in arubas killer, why has nothing been done to those 3 scum bags, b/c our govt doesnt care, it wasnt there kid. I bet it would be a different story if it was a certain persons daughter and you all know who im talking about. Its bull****, Awol might be a crime, no body is doubting that but it should be as bad as a speeding ticket. People drink and drive all the time, get tickets, and that morons is very dangerous. It could hurt or kill someone. People selling drugs to the kids in this county and they plea it out or rat on someone to get out of it, but someone goes awol and there just the lowest of the lowest and it should follow them forever, you people need to wake the **** up, seriously. you ever heard the old saying " do the wrong thing, for the right reason" use your head. Once again our country ****s up every day.

What about that movie with Gene Hackman, where that fighter pilot got shot down over another country, i cant remember what its called, but they went in and rescued him dis obeying orders and the captain or whoever hackman played got demoted in real life for disobeying an order. HE SAVED A SOLDIERS LIFE AND GOT PUNISHED B/C SOME PAPERPUSHER TOLD HIM NOT TO GO IN AND GET HIM. HOW MUCH OTHER BULL**** DO THEY PULL BEHIND OUR BACKS, BUT HEY WHATA GREAT GOVT.

I'm more offended by the fact you don't know the difference between "their' and
"there" (and probably "they're").

You took lots of goodies when you joined and through the course of your tenure with the military. If you run off before your committment is completed, you're no better than a common street thief.
