AWOL ReturneeWhat is the name of your state? TX I went AWOL from Ft. Gordan, GA 10Oct2006. I confirmed my DFR packet over the phone twice. I took a bus to Lawton, OK, then a cab to Ft. Sill 29Jan07. I told the gate gaurd my situation and waited at the gate for the MP's. They were very nice. They placed me in handcuffs and gave me a preliminary search. I was taken to the PCF. We were given an inbriefing. The rules are pretty basic, Treat the Civilians like Drills and be nice to the enlisted. They will tell you that you will be there 2 - 4 weeks, This is a mind game to gain control. Once you're into the PCF you do detail in the recycling room. If you are offered a different detail, Take it. You get extras that way. I got to watch a basketball game Thursday, Of course I had to clean the gym afterwards but it was worth it. Females clean the barracks. You inprocess Tuesday. You get a buzzcut and talk to the 1st Sgt. Wendnesday. 1st Sgt. will decide if you get a Ch.10 or you are sent back to your unit. Tell him you will go AWOL again if you want a Ch.10. You see ID's and JAG Thursday. You get your DA31 from the Civilians Friday. You leave as soon as you get your DA31, normally 10am. I was released 11:30 2Feb2007. A payphone is available 20:00 to 22:00 most days. Wake up is 05:30. Chow is 08:00, 12:30 and 18:00. You are not allowed any electronics or more than $20 cash. Place your valuables in the safe, Theft is widespread. I am out on a DA31 right now but my DD214 is to be sent to me. ALL CH.10's are OTH. There is no chance for otherwise and you will not be able to upgrade it. |

| Realistically the Army is supposed to notify you at your HOR and your next of kin. In reality they notified a reference from my original enlistment, with a mis-spelled name, at a mis-spelled address. They will send the letter 30 days after you go AWOL. You ju7st don't know where it will be sent. It will detail that you should send money to ship the items home. You'll find their list is devoid of anything of value if you even get it. For all purposes assume your property is lost. |

| Were you in AIT or Basic still when you went AWOL? |

| AIT, MOS-Q, MOS-I. Waited seven months for transfer to a permanent duty station before I got annoyed with the system. Very true SilverPlum, I figure the guys on base that got my stuff deserved the deal they got on it. |

Just curious because, I haven't read any cases on guys that went AWOL and turned themselves in that had already completed Basic and AIT. Trying to get an idea on what happens to them. Were there any guys that got the Chapter 10 discharge there without having left before completing those??? THANKS. |

| Yes, I entirely completed AIT and all of my testing. I was simply waiting to PCS. You're basically guaranteed to get a Ch.10 until you PCS to your permanant party station. Once you PCS your chances of being sent back to your unit increase. Three guys were there with me from permanant party that got Ch.10's, So it's still possible. There was one PP that was sent back to his unit, But his unit was simply across post and he had discipline problems. |

| Oh, ok thanks. Sorry for all the questions, but also..... Do you think someone would be sent back to their unit if they deployed a couple months ago to Afganistan? I heard it's possible, but I don't understand how if they are out of the country..... Or do they just send them back to the base they were at? Just thought you might have heard or seen something like this while you were there Also was it fairly cheap or expensive for your cab fare to the gate? We are low on on money and I am trying to figure out bare minimums for him to go to Ft. Sill and hopefully back. |

| Usually it takes 30 days. However, my fiance went months before I finally just called his company up and told them they needed to send paperwork in (I don't remember the name exactly, USADIP told me). And within a few days, I was told they sent it in and he was DFR. Also, GI Rights told me that you have to be DFR and have a Federal Warrant issued to get a discharge. |
