Can Army stop discharge/deployment?

What is the name of your state? CA
My son had been in the army for about 2 yrs. He went to Iraq last year for 8 mos. When he signed the papers to enlist it says his enlistment in the regular army is 2 yrs. 18 weeks. It says later on in the papers that his original enlistment obligates him to 8 yrs of service. They were going to deploy him again to Iraq in Dec but have pushed it back to March. Can they make him stay in and go to Iraq even though his enlistment was for 2 yrs. 18 weeks? Or can he go into the reserves?

I should elaborate. When a person enlists they enlist for 8 years. 4 in the active 4 in the inactive reserve, 6 in the active 2 in the inactive, 2 active 6 inactive... You get the point.

When the military needs people they will activate folks even though they think they are done with there active duty service. All contracts are for 8 years and if the military needs people they will keep them active. The phrase is called "stop loss" and it basically means to stop the loss of active duty personel.

War sucks...

Best wishes and good luck

Yup. And even if he got put in the Reserves, chances are pretty good he may deployed from there also. Trust me, there has been a lot of this stuff going on, they've even been delaying peoples retirement to deploy them.

True... I know a active duty Gunny who wants to retire. They won't let him. The good news is and I know this is small consolation, is that after that 8 years is up they can never touch him again even if there is a draft.
