deceased spousal support

Is it legal for a mother to receive compensation from the military for her commom law husband's death (who was in the military), and yet have another man openly claim to be the child's father? She is receiving money because the deceased is the child's father, yet another man is stating he is the child's father.

If the deceased military member was the legal father of the child, the child is entitled to any eligible benefits.
