Dependency Question???Hey this is my first post and I really just joined to ask this question. My father is Army and him and my younger sisters and mother have been stationed in Germany while I've been living state side. Anyways, my father is getting stationed back stateside and my sister wants to stay here for personal reasons (boyfriend). She's 18 and is graduating from hs soon and is still considered a dependent. My question is can she legally stay behind and live in europe and still receive all of her dependent benefits while her sponsor, my father, is stationed elsewhere? My parents checked with the JAG office and they said it's a nogo and that she will lose all dependent privileges and will pretty much be unable to legally stay without a work visa. I know that's kind of answering my own question, but she's very stubborn and doesn't believe much of what my parents say so I want to see what anyone on here had to say. |

if she isn't approved for a work visa...then looks like she'll be headed back here. |

| Yea we're all trying to convince her to come back to the states. She is leaving the day after graduation to live with her boyfriend until she can find a job. She thinks that a restaurant on post is going to give her a job and work visa because her boyfriend's friend worked there all through college as a military dependent on a student visa. Then when he graduated this restaurant granted him a work visa and she thinks that this restaurant where she's never worked is going to give her a work visa off the street. Now maybe they will. I don't know how expensive/inexpensive it is for an employer to give someone a work visa. I'm just tryin to be big brother here and give her some advice. It seems like her bf has convinced her that my parents are being controlling and that shes an adult and doesn't have to listen to them anymore. I know rambling but just trying to paint a better picture of the situation. She doesn't really believe what my parents to her a freakin JAG lawyer said so I'm pretty sure this is kinda in vein ![]() |

| at 18, she doesn't HAVE to listen to her parents. or you at all. she can stay, and go through the embarrassment of getting deported if that work visa doesn't work out like she had planned. ![]() |

| Oh sure haha I know she doesn't have to listen to my parents or me or the JAG lawyer lol. The restaurant she wants to work at is actually on a military base. She wouldn't be able to really get on base unless she has a scanable military ID or a work visa. Anyways guess we'll just see what happens. From what I've read you have to apply for a work visa and the employer has to supply a letter saying that they've tried to fill the position with a EU citizen already and she would need a residence permit to even apply lol. I think she's gonna have to learn the hard way ha... |
