HPSP Medical Program PLEASE HELP!!!!

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hi everyone, I start medical school in September and I signed onto the Air Force 4 years Health professional scholarship program. At this point, after hearing from many doctors, I feel I made the worst mistake of my life. Since I haven't started school or received any financial compensation, is there any legal way I can have them cancel my obligation?

I already signed on the dreaded dotted line making it official but at this point, I'm still not attending school or taken any money yet. I know there are some people that want the scholarship and all slots for fiscal year 2009 are filled up. Would the military be willing to let me go and give it to another person? Please help, I need to find out soon before school starts.

The reasons I do not want to go through the military route is very, very personal, which is centered around the health of immediate family members.

You would be surprised how much you could get accomplished by simply manning up and calling the people that extended you the offer in the first place.

You can request withdrawal

According to AFI 36-3209, available at:

http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/shared/media/epubs/AFI36-3209.pdf

you can request withdrawal (page 34 of the PDF):

2.21. Withdrawal from Military Medical Educational Assistance Programs.
2.21.1. An officer may be involuntarily discharged who has been properly withdrawn by the Air Force from a military medical educational assistance program for any of the following reasons:
...
2.21.1.6. Approved voluntary request for withdrawal by the officer from their education assistance program when HQ AFPC/DPPRS has determined the officer cannot be utilized elsewhere in the Air Force, no matter whether the officer has also voluntarily tendered their resignation or not.

They don't have to approve the withdrawal.
