| | Incentive promised, none delivered What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WI
I'm a 2LT in the army nurse corps. When i signed that dotted line, I left, assured by those who convinced me, that I would be receiving a benefit to pay off my student loans for three years of service. To make a long story short, my hips are shot and I cannot pass the APFT. Apparently, in order to receive any incentives (not to mention any promotions and other "favorable action") I must pass the APFT, which is simply not ever going to happen.
I've read through a few of the posts regarding AWOL and desertion...I'm sorry to say I've considered this for the past three months as desperation consumes me. The money I could make as an RN in the civilian world is nearly triple that of the army (hell, I did some simple math, and if i'd been getting hourly wage through the 9 months i've already served, i'd have nearly half my loans paid for). I signed up because I'm prior service air force and felt that the nurse corps would help secure me, my wife, my 3 year old daughter, and my unborn child financially and professionally. It has done neither. In fact, it seems to have taken me step backwards.
Before I take the plunge losing my 1994 honorable discharge, I would like to ask for clarity on the licensure issue (my research into my states law says that if i have not shown poorly towards my profession, there will be no problem). I'm also incredibly stressed because of the lack of support from my chain of command and the army in general regarding this. I still work 50+ hours per week and fulfill my duties. I simply cannot do sit-ups. If there is a way to work around this to get the benefit I was promised, I'll unpack my things right now and finish what I signed up for. |

| | | Ever thought about going to see the Doc, and get profiled for your physical impairment,
thus, you just may be eligible for a Medical Discharge in lieu of anything less than
Honorable. |

If it says that you cannot get the benefits you signed up for, if you don't pass your APFT then you're screwed. A contract is a contract...
But, as SHORTYLONG said you may very well be elligble for a medical discharge. You should look into that possiblitly before doing something stupid. At least you will be out with good paper, and can move on with your life.
Best of luck ;-)
