letter from the VA

What is the name of your state? New York

I just recently received a letter from the VA regarding the recent burglary of information. It looks pretty "up and up" type of stuff, but I am concerned as to what type of legal issues this whole debacle might have created.

Has anyone else received this letter? Your thoughts? Advice? Etc...

Thanks bunches What is the name of your state?

Run a free credit check with the three credit reporting agencies.

This is legit. A data analyst took home a laptop, against regs, and it was stolen from his house in a robbery. He has since been fired. The VA director is in hot water and will likely 'retire'. Likely, the 'teens' who were caught doing the robberies wiped the laptop clean and resold it. So it doesnt look like there is a tort yet, but there was exposure. It included some active duty folks as well.
The VA has a special hotline up now for all questions.

I'd call it and ask why the GI Bill is such a pain in the 6 o'clock.....

Veteran Inquiries (800) 333-4636

The Department of Veterans Affairs recently learned that an employee, a data analyst, took home electronic data from the VA, which he was not authorized to do. This data included names, social security numbers, dates of birth and some disability ratings for up to 26.5 million veterans and some spouses, as well as personal information on as many as 1.1 million military members on active duty, 430,000 members of the National Guard, and 645,000 members of the Reserves. Importantly, the affected data did not include any of VA's electronic health records nor any financial information. The employee's home was burglarized and this data was stolen.

I just got my letter. The thing that bothers me is I know of 3 other men with the same name as mine in the Army.

What if this idiot that stole the PC has my same name? Now he has my SS # and will be able to buy a car or run up a bill at my expense.

I run my credit report on an annual basis and I also have the same name as other vets. I am pissed too. So now I am supposed too go into super extra overtime credit protection mode? Because a supposedly proffesional government agency loses my private information.

I have no problem with a lawsuit.

What really pisses me off is that a lot of the people on that hard drive where people ( people with bad paper) that never planned on collecting anything from the VA.

I got this letter too

if you call transunion which is in the letter they have a seperate prompt for anyone in the military who got this letter to put a fraud watch on your account. I did it fast! Yes the story is legit hopefully nothing will come of it but I wasn't about to take any chances.

I got the same letter, which I find really odd. It's odd because I've never really been in the military, nor have I ever worked for the military as a civilian. I did take ROTC and AFROTC classes in college back in the early 80s, but only the first two years, and I never signed a contract. (The first two years are exploratory to see if a student is interested and doesn't require a commitment.) I did have a flight physical in 1984 in preparation to go in, but I decided to not go in. This was in my maiden name, which I haven't used for 21 years.

My husband has never been in the military, nor worked for the military. My father was in the guard back in the early 60s, but that was before I was ever born

Yes, in fact you are not the only one who has recieved this letter. My husband did. His info was part of htat file that was "stolen" and the letter stated not to worry about identity theft...... Well I have to tell you that since the incident happened we ahve had ALOT of mail regarding credit cards, grants ect... as well as telephone calls. We are also at a loss as what to do in this situation!

Well in capitalist Amerca we have a system of checks and balances. When one is wronged then they must be righted. Correct?

So if the Government is going to just let our private information go unprotected...

And there solution to the error is to tell us to be more vigilant, and run more credit reports on ourselves. Then I think they should have to pay us to do these things.

How do we get the government to pay us for our time spent doing these things? They (the government) arene't usually very forthcoming with money or information.

I know. Do you?

I totally agree with the fact that the government should have to compensate those who were affected by this theft which occurred simply due to the lack of protection of the privacy of personal records of the MANY men and women who have fought for our country. Getting them to actually fork over what is rightfully owed..... Now that's a whole different ballgame. It's hard enough (and Lord knows it's takes forever and a day!) to get them to approve necessary medical treatment for my husband who, like many others have put their life on the line time and time again for the freedom of ALL Americans. If there is any information that I am unaware of PLEASE enlighten me. The strange inquires via telephone as well as US mail (regarding credit affairs) continue to roll in.....
Thank You!
