Medical ConcernWhat is the name of your state? Virginia I am interested in joining the military (air force) as an officer since i have a BS in criminal justice and i am also fluent in Arabic. My concern is that I've been on antidepressants for the past 5 years for depression. However, I have recently dscontinued using them and my doctor is willing to write a letter in support of my abilities to serve in the military. I believe I am qualified and am eager to begin a military career, but am want to gather all the facts before I make a decision. I appreciate any suggestions or advise you might offer. |

| From your post, you sound as you would be a good and fair Officer. Now, about your medical condition, since you have been on anti-depressant medications for five years does not necessary mean you are fully non-depressant which, will be a big hurdle. However, there is nothing wrong with you getting a letting from your Doctor etc., and go and see a recruiter personally. Best of luck.

| You can always ask the military, there is no harm as long as you are up front about your history. Having said that, however, you may not be accepted. Taking meds for five years qualifies as serious emotional illness, and you said you "recently" stopped taking meds. The military is probably going to want you to demonstrate a lengthy period of symptom/medication free time before they will commission you. |

| Additionally, if you are not accepted into Military Service, you can always try the National Guard. And if they will not accept you, then, you can apply for a position within our Federal Government!

Think Long and HardThe military does not care about your MD's opinion. The real question is what was your diagnosis to begin with? Taking that information you can Google the medical standards for the service you intend to join. Once you let them know your medical history it is hard to undo so research first and see if it can be termed in a fashion that will allow you to serve. Notice I am not trying to get you to lie about it just find the spin that gives you what you want. |
