nephews airforce records

What is the name of your state? TX.

Not sure where to start, but I thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction... My nephew is in military prison. I have been given a VERY vague reason (s) by his wife. But there are a ton of holes in the story, and nothing seems to add up. Is there a way for an uncle to obtain arrest reports or anything that will give me a truthful idea of what's going on? I know I'm probably waisting my time and privacy laws are in place, but is there anything I can do? Thanks for ANYTHING you can help with.

You can indeed get public information via a Freedom of Information Act request. This includes the actual transcripts of any court martials of the service member. The question is who to send the request to. I'm not certain how records on military inmates are kept ( files forwarded to the National Archives, kept by services, DoD, etc.).

If you can trust asking the inmate himself there are some things you can try:

If he is still on active duty you can use his branch's locator service to get his address.

If the person has been transferred to the federal Bureau of Prisons system (which is commonly done with long term prisoners) the following may help:

To locate someone in the federal BOP system:
http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp

Also for BOP prisoners:
national Inmate Locator number at 202-307-3126, 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. weekdays, Eastern Time. Due to the large volume of requests, callers may experience delays.

Some state locator databases give crime convicted, projected release, etc. but I don't recall if the federal database does.

Thanks for the response. he's not listed with the BOP.

He is being held at Miramar in Ca. Is there any way I can access his records if he's in a military facility?

You can obtain a very basic form by filing a sf180 but it won't tell you much.

If he is in prison that is pretty public information, lots of online resources that will give you the "goods" on him

Do a google search. If you are not succesful; come back and I am sure one of our scholars will point you in the right direction

good luck

Thanks for the info and the link (interesting read). I have tried the "google" route, but without success. I assumed it was because he was in a military brig and not a "non military" facility.

Did you try looking him/his case up on the navy/marine court of criminal appeals website?

Any punitive discharge or confinement over 1 year is automatically appealed. However, they have been moving through their cases pretty slowly, so unless he was convicted more than 3 years ago, the decision is probably not out on him yet.

Shoot! I thought you said he was in the navy. I'm totally losing it!

Try the air force court.

OK... here's what I know... He got arrested. LOL.
Seriously, it was somewhat of a dead end. I know it was pretty serious and I've submitted a FOIA worksheet. Now I guess I wait and see what comes up.
