| You will almost certainly have to inform the government at some point. How they handle the situation will depend largely on the details of your diagnosis and prognosis. If your illness is acute and only needs relatively short term counseling/medication, then that may not be disqualifying. If, however, you have a chronic illness then the military will probably decide you are inelegible for further service. That might mean termination of any benefits you receive. However, you would not normally be required to repay any benefits you have already collected unless there was some misconduct involved (for example, lied about your medical history).
You may be tempted to lie in order to "stretch" out your benefits, i.e. have the military pay for your school and then at the final physical fail. If the military finds out you have lied to them (even if by omission), they may well decide that you have been lying since Day One and demand repayment of ALL benefits you received. Once you have ruined your credibility by lying about being ill, it is hard to convince them to believe you about WHEN you became ill. |
