Question

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? North Carolina

My son got a ticket for possession of a small amount of marijuana. He plead 9090 to the charge (I have no idea what that is but he was advised to do that, it was his mess up so I let him deal with it). He received 6 months probation and had a attend a drug and alcohol class. When his probation is over his record will be expunged.

My question pertains to his eligibility to join the military, the Air Force to be exact.

He is a 19 year old young man who has no idea what he wants to do with his life. He's flunked out after one year of college. He was in JrROTC in High School and is seriously considering joining the Air Force for the discipline and options it will give him. His probation is only while he is in college so it's like he's getting a 3 month break for the summer. He'll be off probation in December. Will all of this hurt his chances to get in? Is there a way to lessen his probation time so he can join before December?

All of this will be his choice but he has a cousin his age who has just enlisted and is finding it to be what he was looking for. They have been talking about it and he seems to be leaning that way.

Yes having a drug charge will have an adverse effect on his ability to join the Air Force and get the job he wants. Joining the Air Force will not allow him to be released from his probation early. In fact, I believe the Air Force will not even consider him for enlistment until at least 90 days after his probation is completed.
