Security Clearance

What is the name of your state? Missouri

My son, almost 21, could not get security clearance when enlisting in the Army which prevented him from getting many MOS choices. When he was 18, he was arrested for stealing a $3.00 item at walmart. He paid the fine in City Court, paid a civil fine to Walmart, apologized to the walmart manager, wrote a letter of apology to Walmart corporate. How can he get whatever he needs (waiver?) to get this behind him?
He scored above 90 on the AVSBA (misspelled) and does have over 30 hours of college credit. He is about to finish basic training with an MOS that was not his 1st choice. Thanks for any suugestions!

I doubt that there is anyway to get around it since it is already documented in his military files. What MOS was he trying for?

He wanted MI, but ended up, believe it or not, with Transportation Operator or 88m. How and when can change his MOS? Will this hang with him forver in the Army?

I doubt he would be able to get MI. I know some MI ppl that have 3-5 different high level security clearances.

But there are many other good jobs that he might be able to possibly get a Secret security clearance for.

Intel requires high clearance levels, and criminal records (doesn't matter how "minor" it is or was). Like another person said, he might be able to get a Secret, but probably not a TS or higher.

I am sorry for the dealy, I posted a response the other morning right as the server went down for backup...

He can change his MOS after serving his first tour of service. Tell him to ensure he has an IMMACULATE record of service. This record of service will override his civilian charge, but it must be pristine.

For those who don't know, a security clearance for an MP is harder to get than for MI. Nobody can explain why, but it is.

Why are you not contacting his Recruiter about this? He has all of the answers, just like I do (Recruiter myself).

Not all recruiters continue helping the people they enlist once they left for boot camp.

I've never talked to mine since I enlisted over 2 years ago and I have tried contacting him numerous times.

Big difference here... His son shipped out less than 2 months ago...

YOUR Recruiter most likely PCSed by now, since it is only a 3 year tour.

All of this is besides the point. Somebody in that office can answer any questions he might have had.

My recruiter was a recruiter for over 7 years he was active national gaurd. He retired about 1 year ago. Before he retired I wrote many letters and left many messages but he never got back to me and niether did the other recruiters there.

Most recruiters I've seen don't care what happens to you once you have left for boot camp.

Well, I sort of went through the same thing. I went in for MI, got my security clearance denied. (Because of a credit card I defaulted, and PAID, 8 years ago) My asvab score was 95, with all line scores above 126. The ARMY offered me 3 jobs - 88M, 11B, and cook. From what I was told I had two options...take one of the 3 options for reclass, or I could wait at Basic for up to 16 months until my FULL background check was done, and I may be able to get my clearance.

Another girl that was in my company and platoon was doing the same thing, she had 4 prior convictions of what we civilians consider "dumb" things. Underage drinking, petty theft, etc, all when she was under 18. She was processed through with MI, her recruiter, and both the security interviewers saying she would be fine...(as mine did) Whoops! Not true.

My belief? Just another way the Army is filling the critical shortage needs. What I don't understand? Why not do some background checking BEFORE fully signing up? I mean, you don't get hired for a job, and THEN give them your resume...right?

At any rate, not that I'm recommending this...but I decided to leave. My father was military...so I always knew about AWOL this, and AWOL that. Funny, because my entire life I KNEW that was such a bad decission...until I was faced with that, or driving a truck in the sandbox. Sorry, just not a job that I want.

Your son will be able to change his MOS after his first full tour. Unfortunately, I don't know how many months that will equal him being on tour in Iraq...
