Son Late from Christmas Leave--what happens?

What is the name of your state? CO but my son is in GA
My son was in the middle of OSUT training at Ft Benning, GA when they closed for Christmas and he came home for 2 weeks. When he went to return on Monday, there was a problem at the airport (he had a paper ticket, his flight was delayed 3 hours so we didn't go to the airport until 1 1/2 hours before the flight, small airline, no one at the ticket counter except us and 3 other passengers trying to get on the flight, paged everyone, called 1-800 #, no one responded, flight left without them, last flight to GA that night, they scheduled him on a flight 2 days later (ie today)). He tried to call the base over and over but no one answered the # he was to call and when he went up the chain, they said to call the other number. They called him the next morning and he tried to explain but they didn't want to hear the story, just wanted to know when his flight was. He called them today as his flight was going to be late and they said he didn't show on the computer as coming back. We had him fly out anyway, and he called when he got there, no one was there to meet him. He tried calling the base again, no answer. He has caught a shuttle to the base but isn't sure if anyone will be there to get him in the training area. Did we do the right thing having him go back? What will happen to him? He was very scared and thought about not going back at all but felt it was best to face the music now. Any chance they'll listen to his story? He is scheduled to graduate on the 27th of January and we have non-refundable flights out for it. As he hasn't been able to contact us much in the past, who can I call to find out if he was able to reconnect with his group and if he will graduate or what?

Thanks for your help.

**I appreciate those who were able to offer helpful advice and post the link. I had been unable to locate it after all this happened. I don't understand why some people felt the need to attack when this is supposed to be a friendly advice forum.

As long as there is proof of what happened he should be ok, especially since he went there even when they didn't meet him, the same thing happened to my son between basic and AIT in the USMC, he missed his flight, I called and promised to get him on the next flight out and they met him in the morning, instead of peeling potatoes & KP for a month he was sent as punishment straight into AIT, lol so he graduated ahead of his group. THis happens.

You expect us to believe Ft. Benning Boot Camp closed for Christmas? You are out of your mind, and the rest of your story is to stupid to respond too.

In fact, you are so astonishingly correct in this matter, it will not surprise us one bit if you are offered a generous settlement, because, by golly, that’s just how it should be.

Great Link Fozzy, my apologies. I have never heard of that, but the contact info was even at the bottom of your link.

All Soldiers must return to Fort Benning, no later than 11:59pm (2359 hrs) on 2 January 2006. This means many Soldiers will be traveling on 1 and 2 January 2006. The first step in ensuring that you report back to Fort Benning on time is to confirm your return travel arrangements as soon as you arrive home and then continue to check on this status occasionally throughout your leave period. Don’t wait until the day before to check with the airline on your return travel arrangements.

Soldiers should look for Drill Sergeants for assistance upon arrival back at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The Drill Sergeants will marshal returning Soldiers to appropriate areas to ensure they return to Fort Benning, GA. If Soldiers do not encounter a Drill Sergeant upon their arrival for whatever reason, they may check in with the United Service Organization (USO) office once they arrive back at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta for further instructions. Fort Benning will then provide bus transportation back to Sand Hill. Upon arrival to Sand Hill, all Soldiers are to report to 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment Headquarters for in processing from EXODUS leave. Return trip uniform is the same uniform Soldiers departed in for leave—Battle Dress (BDU) or Army Combat Uniform (ACU).

Actually...yes they do. We were stationed there for three years and every Christmas, the students were allowed to go home for two weeks and most things on the post either shut down or shortened their hours. it's pretty much the same for any training post.
So really, who's the stupid one now?

You, Fozzy already supplied the link, and I apologized. Anything more to add?

Regarding your son, given his deriliction of duty, AWOL, and other offenses, I would fully expect them to court martial him and send him to jail for a while.

Or they might impose non-judicial punishment.

Or they might administratively punish him with a letter of reprimand and some kind of extra duty.

Or they might just do nothing.

What "other offenses" and "deriliction of duty"?
