UA from SUBschool

OH Hello, my husband went UA for two days to visit his mother out of state. He returned and is now being sent to captains mast. What could his punishment be and is there anyway to avoid being discharged? Thank you very much

Ohioan, if this was the only infraction your husband has in his time of active Military Duty, then,
chances are slim to none that he would be discharged unless he pushes to be.

As far as his punishment, that all is up to the one ministering the Capitan's mask.

Agreed with shortylong. He is looking at pay reduction and restriction, and maybe reduction in rank. He can get past this.

Strictly speaking, he can *not* be discharged at a Captain's Mast (NJP). Discharge is not one of the sanctions permitted by NJP. However, if he is sanctioned at Captain's Mast, that fact can be used at subsequent administrative proceedings to determine whether or not he should be discharged. For example, an administrative quality control "review board".

Maximum sanctions depend on the rank of the person being sanctioned. (sanctioned = punished in common usage). For example, confinement on bread and water can not be imposed on E-4 and above. But "bread and water" is rarely ever used these days as far as I know. More common: Reduction in rank can only be to the next inferior rank, but Navy E-7 and above (and USMJ E-6 and above) can not have their rank reduced at Mast.

Before going to Captain's Mast, the person will be advised what the maximum punishments might be.

I know this thread is a bit old but I had to respond to Fozzy2:

DH had a friend (FC) who was on the same ship and decided to go UA. He missed ships movement and turned himself in at 28days UA. He was held on base until the ship returned (few days later). At CO mast, he received reduction in rate from E4 to E2 and a max 3 days bread and water. He is the ONLY person I have ever met to have gotten a bread and water sentence. I believe that the new CO wanted to show everyone he was tough on sailor's going UA. After a 90 day restriction, reduction in pay (1/2mth pay x 2), reduced rank, and EMI ... he was other than honorably discharged.

Oh yes, he had reenlisted less than 6mths earlier and had to pay back his $30K bonus.
