All of his pay and allowances will be frozen and he will have a hard uphill battle. I can't remember the last application I filled out that didn't ask if I had ever served in the military... I had a hard enough time finding a job after college, I can't imagine what it would have looked like if I had a dishonorable discharge on my DD-214.

The army doesn't need to ever look for him, every time he gets in a car he runs the risk of getting a traffic violation and getting detained by the civilian authorities. The Army is patient.... they will wait however long it takes them to get him back, and then detain and discharge him then. Going AWOL does not end his status as a member of the Armed Forces, and he can continue to be charged under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) until he is properly discharged.

Tell your friend to do the right thing and turn himself in. It's not too late for him to turn himself in and throw himself at the mercy of his Commander. A reduction in rank and some extra-duty is better than forever marking his record with a dishonorable discharge.
