Get a copy of the check back and front from your bank and write a letter to every company involved (bank, mortgage companies, whatever) and send it certified mail return receipt requested. Send it to both companies. Tell them you did your part (i.e., paid the bill) and it is up to them to decide who got it and where it went.
Keep copies of all correspondence forever and keep after them till someone gets it resolved and tells you so IN WRITING.
