Bad business practices

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

I got a "hard money loan" on a rental property for $9,000. I went to sign papers at a Residential title company. I was told I would get my check soon. I never got a check or money. I was given the run around and eventually contacted the loan company. They sent me a copy of a check that was cashed by the title co. The company dissolved and it took months to finally find the owner, I am now suing for my money. I also found out that the owner is a lawyer in my state. Is there any hope for me?
