death of single mortgagee with joint tenancy deed

What is the name of your state?What is the name of your state? Illinois

My unmarried partner and I own a home title in Joint Tenancy with survivorship rights. The mortgage, though, is in his name only. What becomes of the balance of the mortgage if he were to (g*d forbid!) die? Is it nullified, or would I become responsible for it? Do I have to refinance in my name, continue the payments, or pay the balance in full?

We're trying to determine if and how much life insurance we should purchase. We have no other debts and very little assets.
