forecloser on 2nd mortgage

I am in California.
I am facing foreclosure on next Tuesday for a 2nd mortgage from nine years ago. At that time the mortgage company sent me a notice not to make any more payments until they contacted me with new payment instructions. I have not heard from them in the next eight years. Keep in mind that I am still living in the same house. They made no attempt to contact me. The first I heard from them is the foreclosure proceedings. I obtained an attorney but he has been unable to get anyone from the mortgage company to talk to him. My first mortgage is paid up to date. Can they really foreclose and evict me? I don't understand how this can be happening to me. :
