Two years ago, when my husband was retired unwillingly from work, we owned two houses. Rather than sell the one with the mortgage, my husband allowed my son and his family to take it over. We moved to the unmortgaged mountain cabin and all went well for 19 months. Unbeknownst to us, our son defaulted on the mortgage and by the time we found it, it was four months behind and we could not afford to bail it out. We placed it up for sale, but with the fines and extras attached and the damages they had done, we had one buyer who then backed out. My question is, if they foreclose on the property, can they take our unmortgaged home that we are living in?
