What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? california
Home foreclosed a year ago; HELOC is suing. Don't have the money; we have tried to settle and set up payment plan. They want us to give them our kids savings accounts (we are on the accounts because they are minors) and more than we owe. Bankruptcy is becoming an option. What kind of attorney would be best to hire for the lawsuit?

You're in trouble. Unless you've got tons of money socked away in these kids accounts, it's probably going to cost more than the contents to fight this and I suspect it's going to be pointless. If "on the accounts" means you were listed as a joint holder, then the money is reachable. You are the owner of it as far as the courts are concerned. There are other ways to have done that which could have provided better protection.
