House is under contract but almost in foreclosure

What is the name of your state? NC
My husband and I were late on our mortgage payments and have been on the mortgage company's repayment plan since January. We are behind again, but decided to take the step to sell our house to avoid foreclosure all together. Now the mortgage co is threatening foreclosure since we have been late on our repayment plan. They want a payment by Friday, but that is impossible. Our closing date of sell is scheduled in 3 weeks. If the mortgage company puts us in foreclosure status, will this affect the sell of our house in any way? What kind of legalities will we face?

Did you tell the mortgage company that you are closing in 3 weeks?
