NC Foreclosure question

What is the name of your state?NC

Our house is being foreclosed in just a few days. I am lost to how the whole process works afterwards. I've been researching online and read all kinds of information that I am unsure if its true or not. Once the house is auctioned, what happens to us next besides horrible credit? Can we be sued if the house doesn't sell for the whole mortgage price? Can the mortgage company take our tax returns that we will be getting in February? What about house taxes, who is responsible for those after the sale date, January 5? Thanks for any help.
