Questions about Foreclosure problems

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA/FL

We purchased a new home in a community with a club house and HOA. The home was purchased in 2006 as an investment to resell . Due to the real estate market and the economy we had to let the house go in order to keep our main residence. We just received a lawsuit from both the HOA as well as the Mortgage Company suing for payment. Have you ever heard of a Mortgage Company suing someone that went into foreclosure? Are we obligated to pay the HOA assessments if we are in foreclosure? We are not sure what we should do.
