Still Paying On Foreclosure

What is the name of your state? Virginia
Hello, hope someone can help me out here.
My (widowed) mother had a house solely in her name then married. New husbands name went on deed. They split and rather than fight it out, she left the house and it foreclosed. This was 5 years ago.
In the meantime, all of her tax refunds has been claimed to pay on the foreclosure. Neither of us understands why this is occurring.
I thought once it was foreclosed that was it, she didn't have to pay anything else? Now she wonders if when she retires her social security will be seized?
The person who bought the house got it for next to nothing, and I am wondering what she is responsible to pay for?
No communication with ex spouse.

Sounds like the lender got a deficiency judgment. At the time of foreclosure, the difference between the value of the property and all outstanding debt should be be your maximum exposure. (ie, if the debt (including all fees etc) was $100,000 and the property was valued at $75,000, the dificiency judgment would be $25,000)

**A: you could have contacted the lender that filed the foreclosure.
