Is it too late to back out of short sale?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CALIFORNIA
My house is being sold thru a short sale and it is in escrow now. Can I legally back out of this deal or is it out of my hands and up to the bank now. I've heard of upcoming laws that could possible help in saving my home thru new loan modification procedures. Please advise.
