Two family home, two separate mortgages

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

My wife and I are looking to buy a two family home with her sister and her husband. Because of differing credit scores and for the sake of keeping our finances separate, we'd each like to come into this purchase with our own mortgages. We've been unable to find any definitive information on whether this is possible or not. The one bank we discussed this with did not offer this option. How can we go about doing this?

In order to have two separate mortgages, you will need to find a building for which each unit has it's OWN legal description. Such as a row house or side by side condo.
