What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Is a survey required to obtain property by adverse possession?

There is nothing in the law requiring a survey.

Having said that; you will have to meet all the requirements under California law, and a survey may help you do that. It all depends on the circumstances; which you haven't elaborated on.

A survey isn't necessarily required, it would only be entered into evidence for the courts to consider. In addition to meeting the minimum requirements to obtain adverse possession, you still may need additional evidence to support your claim...i.e. mowing patterns, fence lines, etc.
