We were in the process of installing an inground basketball hoop on the side of our driveway but the process was aborted, due to strong objection from our neighbor claiming it blocks their view and the missed shots would come on to their property. Same hoop, with the similar location is installed between our property and our other side neighbor but our appeal by the HOA was rejected. When we asked how our neighbors got permission, we were told that there was no Objection raised from the previous owner of our house. My question is...Aren't all of us be governed by the same HOA bylaws? Why does it differ from house to house? Can I do something about it?

what is the verbiage of the specific rules invoked to refuse you permission to install the hoop?

Some rules are written such that permission of those affected rules. That means those affected have the right to say yeah or nay on the issue at hand.
