What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Arizona Phoenix.

I was told earlier that I could trim all branches that were on my side of the fence. It will really make the tree look bad but it is hanging over.
I went to talk to the neighbor and they were not friendly at all and we told them that we were within our right to trim so deal with it. I also told them that we would pay the expense as well. They were nasty.
Is there a possibility that they will try to take us to court over this? And if so Do I need to document the before and after the cutting and the mess on my patio for this.
Also if It was to go to court what would happen?
