What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Montana

We have lived in our house for 2 yrs. and gotten along great with our neighbors up until we told them we were moving. (job relocation) Now they want us to cut the branches of our trees that are overhanging onto their property. There is no danger from them. These branches were already overhanging when we bought the property. I know the neighbor has the right to cut them back to the property line, but are we legally obligated to cut them or pay to have it done? They are threatening a lawsuit.

That's kind of what we figure too. Does anyone know how to handle it for the new owners if they get hassled about it by the neighbors can they come back on us and say it was a "pre-existing condition"?
