Accusation of Bedbugs

This past June, as I was moving, I offered a hide-a-bed sofa for free on craigslist. A man replied to the post and picked it up (6.16.09). Today (10.21.09), I received an email from the girlfriend of the man who took the sofa claiming that the sofa gave them bedbugs, resulting in their having to throw away their mattress and various articles of clothing and accruing substantial medical fees. She has threatened to sue me for the the loss of property and medical bills.

I received the sofa second-hand myself and had it in my apartment for nearly a year. I have never had problems with bed bugs. I never had any indication that the sofa contained any kind of infestation. I have also spent the evening inspecting the furniture which came with me from the move and have found no indication of bed bugs. I do not believe the sofa had bedbugs when I gave it away.

Should I be concerned that there might be legal validity to her (their?) claim?

**A: I highly doubt that they will be able to prove their claim. Next time include in the Cariglist description ...also no extra charge for bedbugs**************..

Yeah. That's what I figured, too. It's just a bit unnerving to receive a legal threat like that out of the blue.
