Buying a motorcycle with a lien

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington.

I am looking to buy a motorcycle through craigslist. I am able to meet with the seller at the time of purchase. I have the full amount of sale in cash. The seller has informed me that there is a lien on the bike. I have not purchased a vehicle with a lien before. I was wondering how to go about it to ensure the lien is paid off. I have read a few forums on here and elsewhere on the net. From what I gather the best way would be for me to have a certified check for the 10 day pay off balance of the lien made out to the holding company and give him what is left from the selling price in cash. Then I would have to wait to have the title mailed to his house and have him mail it to me. Or could I just enclose a bill of sale with the Certified check to the Holding company and have them mail it directly to me.
Is it also possible to have the Holding company transfer the loan to my name?
Not sure which way would be the best or easiest.

There is only one sure way to complete such a transaction without getting burned. You go to the leinholder with the seller, pay off the outstanding balance and leave with the paperwork giving you title to the vehicle. You then pay the seller the rest of the money and leave with the bike. If the seller refuses to do the above, take your business elsewhere.

Simply, you cannot purchase the vehicle with a lien in place. Make sure the title is clear by release of lien BEFORE you pay anything to the 'seller'.
